High-res Moto E5, E5 Plus press images leave no side unseen


This isn't the first time we've seen the Moto E5 Plus in press images - the previous ones we saw are the same as the ones below only the phone came in Light Blue.

Moto E5 Plus in Gold The rendered images show the front that has an 18:9 tall-aspect screen and a glossy back that houses a fingerprint scanner and a camera module.

The glossy finish looks like it could be glass or metal but considering the expected entry-level price tag, it could also turn out to be glossy plastic.

The camera module looks like it houses a dual camera but it's only a single lens and what could prove to be either an empty placeholder or a laser autofocus module.

Now, for the Moto E5.

It's a less flashy lookalike to the Moto E5 Plus, with a simpler matte finish on the back.

Again, it looks metal but could just as easily prove to be plastic.

There's unmistakably a single camera on the back and once again a fingerprint scanner, embedded into the Moto logo.


Explaining the tech behind Huawei P20 Pro's triple camera


Huawei and Leica put a lot of effort into building a unique camera. On paper, the Huawei P20 Pro camera should be the best on the market, though that paper may be tough to understand. So, let us quickly guide you through the three cameras of the Pro. The 40 MP camera is the major selling point. It features a huge 1/1.7” sensor, considerably larger than any current phone. You’re probably thinking that this means small pixels and it does, but it’s not quite so simple. The sensor features something called a Quad Bayer filter, but we should probably explain what a Bayer filter is in the first place. Camera sensors have “pixels”, but they are different from the pixels on a screen – they do not have RGB subpixels or subpixels of any kind. Instead, there is a single color filter in front of each pixel, most often Red, Green or Blue. Each pixel gets information about only one of the three primary colors. The typical Bayer filter is a mosaic-like arrangement that has twice as many Green pixels as Red or Blue (the human eye is most sensitive to green). This means that a 12 MP camera has 6 million green pixels and 3 million each of red and blue. So, how come the final photo has 12 million RGB pixels? Well, each pixels borrows information about the other two primary colors from its neighbors with a bit of math. It’s good enough in most cases, though the interpolation causes some artifacts. In a Quad Bayer arrangement, four pixels grouped in a square share the same color filter. It looks like this: Each pixel still has neighbors of the other two primary colors, but they are not as closely packed as in regular Bayer and the math gets trickier. The overall result isn’t as accurate meaning you get less detail compared to a 40 MP sensor with a regular Bayer filter. But there’s an upside to the Quad variant. Huawei didn't officially confirm this, but here's how we think the HDR feature works. The image sensor on the P20 Pro are like two sensors interleaved together. This allows both “sensors” to take a photo of the same subject but at different exposures, which can then be stacked into an HDR photo. Other phones have to resort to taking two photos in sequence, but that is slower and moving subjects will shift between takes and get blurred. The timing works out like this: exposure #1 + some processing time + exposure #2. Since the Huawei/Leica camera on the P20 Pro takes both photos simultaneously, it only needs as long as the longer of the two exposures. Long story short, you’re better off keeping the camera on the 10 MP setting. You get to enjoy the benefits of HDR and the 40 MP mode isn’t as sharp as the number suggests. You may be thinking that higher resolution is still useful as it lets you zoom in on an image after it has been taken. That’s true, but if getting closer to your subject is what you want, there’s a better way – optical zoom. The Huawei P20 Pro has an 8 MP tele camera. Its lens has an 80 mm (equiv.) focal length, compared to 27 mm of the other two cameras – that’s 3x optical zoom. Since the tele camera is next to the 40 MP camera, their views of the world overlap, allowing the chipset to combine information from both cameras to achieve 5x hybrid zoom. The quality isn’t as good as the optical zoom, but it’s miles ahead of other phones, which typically have 2x tele lenses without the benefit of a high-res neighbor. What about the third camera, the 20 MP black & white one? Well, that one does not have a Bayer filter at all – no need to record color – so it gets more light. You see, the filter removes much of the light so less of it reaches the pixels. A B&W camera handles better in the dark, but most people want color images. There’s a workaround to that. Recall that both the 40 MP camera and the B&W one have the same focal length, 27mm (equiv.). This means they see roughly the same image – not just overlapping images like the tele/40 MP cameras, but actually the same image from left to right, top to bottom (aside from a small shift in perspective). This allows the P20 Pro to combine the low-light shooting advantages of the B&W camera with color information from the 40 MP sensor into one bright and colorful nighttime shot. We suspect that Huawei uses the B&W camera even during the day, the phone will complain if it’s covered up (even in broad daylight). Plus, the P20 Pro is the only phone currently on the market that can push the ISO up to 102,400. Sony recently teased a prototype that can do that, but it was just that - a tease. Current Xperias top out at 12,800. Of course, higher ISO means higher noise. For nighttime landscape photography, you want to increase the exposure time instead. Lucky for you that Huawei's AI-powered stabilization allows you to shoot multi-second exposures hand-held. The results are beyond impressive. Naturally, both the 40 MP camera and the tele camera have optical image stabilization. That's quite important with zoom as every twitch of your hand is multiplied by the zoom factor. Huawei and Leica also improved the Laser autofocus system, which now works up to 2.4m (twice as far as P10's Laser AF) and there's "4D autofocus" with motion prediction to make sure subjects stay in focus. If you had any doubts that Huawei and Leica built one of the most advanced mobile cameras on the market, just remember this – in the majority of its shots it’s using two of its three sensors and melds their images seamlessly.

Huawei's latest flagship smartphones, the P20 and P20 Pro, have made quite a splash in the mobile world since they were announced last month.





And that's now emphasized even more by their sales performance in the company's home market, China.

P20 and P20 Pro devices worth CNY 100 million (that's more than $15 million) were sold in the country in the first 10 seconds after they became available to purchase from its online store last Thursday.

That's definitely impressive, and it might predict that the duo will be successful elsewhere too.

ZTE Iceberg is the first smartphone with two notches


This is certainly an interesting way for a smartphone to leak. Images of an unannounced ZTE smartphone have made their way to World Design Guide in the form of an entry to win a design award. iF World Design was founded by Germans who celebrated exceptional industrial design in aesthetic, ergonomics, and efficiency. ZTE entered a smartphone called the Iceberg to win an award under the "Product" discipline.

As everyone keeps arguing whether or not having a notch in a display is a functional design choice or aesthetic flaw, ZTE went ahead and made a smartphone with two notches in the display. Instead of wondering how to make an all-display smartphone, ZTE doubled the notch to maintain aesthetic symmetry. ZTE even managed to fit a front-facing loudspeaker into each notch.
Rather than having a metal chassis holding the front and rear glass together, another slab of glass seamlessly connects the front and rear glasses to make the phone feel like it's a "fragment of ice". This is where the "Iceberg" name makes total sense for the handset. The phone also has wireless charging.





The ZTE Iceberg uses a seamless glass connection technique to combine two pieces of glass as one unibody, which makes the phone resemble a fragment of ice. The four corners of the phone are transparent to reveal the essential beauty of the glass material. The effect if beautiful and mysterious.
As far as availability. the ZTE Iceberg is set to launch "after 2017", according to the design entry. Development time took 13-24 months and the phone is aimed for launch in Asian, European, and North American markets.

How To Root Samsung Galaxy S8






Download the SamPWND_S8_4File_Firm, the SamPWND_S8.zip, and the systemroot.zip

Download Odin Prince Comsy and Normal Odin

Extract SamPWND_S8_Firm to your desired destination (desktop works), then open Odin Prince Comsy, and place the files in their respective slot (BL –> BL, AP –> AP, CP–> CP, CSC–> CSC)

In Odin, go to options and select, Auto Reboot, Re-Partition, F. Reset Time, Nand Erase All, and Phone Bootloader Update (This will wipe the device)

Put Samsung Galaxy S8 into Download mode (Power + Volume Down + Bixby) A warning screen will come up warning you about flashing a custom os, to continue press Volume Up.

Press Start in Odin (Flashing will begin, this can take up to 10 min)

When complete device will reboot into recovery mode, at this point just select reboot system now.

Complete the Setup, and accept device RSA Keys, to authorize adb (if popup is not there already, or you have dismissed it; please disconnect and reconnect phone, then accept)

Now take the systemroot.zip dowloaded in step one, and extract it to your adb install directory (usually C:adb)

Navigate to adb directory and CTRL + Shift + Right Click, select open cmd window here





Once you have cmd open and the extracted systemroot folder in your adb directory, we can begin.

Type: adb push systemroot /data/local/tmp/systemroot

When that completes type: adb shell

Once in the shell type: chmod -R 0777 /data/local/tmp

This next one is tricky, type: setsid su (the output will look like this: dreamqltesq:/ $ /system/bin/sh: No controlling tty: open /dev/tty: No such device or address
/system/bin/sh: warning: won’t have full job control), you will then be in a very unstable root shell

In order for this shell to become stable you must type exit, it will then drop you into a stable root shell, however this will probably take a few tries as most commands sent to the unstable shell are returned as gibberish. The shell itself will continue to change from standard user to root user, upon a press of the enter key. This will continue until exit is successfully ran and you are dropped into the stable shell (Note: Since the shell is changing from user to root after each command the exit command must be executed will the shell is root, otherwise instead of dropping to a root shell, you will drop to a user shell and have to begin with setsid su again)

Once a stable root shell is achieved you will type: echo /data/local/tmp/systemroot/remount2.sh > /sys/kernel/uevent_helper (this will remount system and rootfs as r/w)

Wait 10 sec and type: mount (confirm that system is mounted as r/w)

Now we will execute the script, type: sh /data/local/tmp/systemroot/root.sh (there will be some errors displayed back to you in adb, don’t worry about them everything is going accordingly)

When the script is done running your device will reboot, and at this point you are done. However, although root has been achieved it is not the smoothest/most stable, but we have a remedy for that as well!

Part Two

With your device still connected to the computer** Take the SamPWND_S8.zip downloaded from step one, and either put it on your device’s internal storage or sdcard

Take your stock firmware of choice, and extract it to your desktop. From this you will take the system.img.ext4 and either put it on your device’s inter storage or sdcard

Download flashfire from the Play Store

Open flashfire and grant root permissions (this must be done with airplane mode enabled), exit flashfire

Open SuperSU, go to settings, scroll to the bottom, and enable pro features. Reopen SuperSU, select flashfire, and force user ROOT

Open flashfire again, and select flash firmware package (choose system.img.ext4)

Select flash ZIP or OTA (choose SamPWND_G950U.zip) Under options for the zip make sure to select mount /system read/write!!

Select wipe and make sure the top 3 options are selected, press the check in the right hand corner





This next step is very important! There is a specific order that these are supposed to be in, from top to bottom: WIPE –> Flash Firmware Package –> Flash ZIP or OTA. If your order is not this, hold down on wipe like it is an appand drag it to the top of the list. Make sure it is in that order before pressing the flash button!

Select EverRoot from main screen and under options disable inject SuperSU

Press the lightning bolt to begin flashing, and wait for your device to reboot

Congratulations you now have a very smooth/fast/stable stock rom, with root. Enjoy!!


Just in: Nokia 6 (2018) Price & Full Soecugivs


HMD's debut Nokia trio was lead by the original 6 - a mid-range phone that was largely led down by its chipset. The company's somewhat alternative strategy of prioritizing stock Android still paid dividends, but it's also keen to show that it's no slow learner. So the second generation is part of Android One program but brings major updates throughout the specs sheet


A Snapdragon 430 device with an asking price of over EUR 200 was a tough sell last year, but the Nokia 6 (2018) comes with an up to date Snapdragon 630. Mid-range Qualcomm offer this might be, but it's also the one with the best power efficiency in the lineup and that might as well be better appreciated by people shopping in this price bracket.

Even physically, the second generation handset is quite different from its predecessor. It looks much better with its anodized aluminum body, which comes in Black with Copper accents, White with Iron accents or Blue with Gold accents. We like the last one the best, but each has its charms. They are clearly a step up from last year's tame black, silver and grey models. The gold accents are also a lot more subtle than on the Nokia 7 Plus, which depending on your view point can be a good or a bad thing.

In keeping with HMD core design principles, materials is where the Nokia 6 (2018) really shines. Despite the lower price bracket the phone is in, it is still crafted almost entirely from 6000 series aluminum, and has a multi-layer matte finish. In all fairness, it doesn't really feel quite as premium as the finish on the Nokia 7 Plus, nor is it as good at repelling fingerprints. But, it still looks stylish, in a "grown-up" kind of way and provides a lot more traction than glass.



Overall handling of the Nokia 6 (2018), also known as the Nokia 6.1, is a pleasant experience. But, it doesn't earn top points for ergonomics, mainly due to its low-profile power and volume keys. These sit very flush to the fairly wide and flat frame and hardly provide any travel of tactile feedback. The "mushiness" gets annoying quickly.

At the front of the Nokia 6 (2018), there is a 5.5-inch FullHD display. Nothing too fancy - just a regular IPS LCD with a 16:9 aspect ratio. No rounded corners or extra-tall aspect ratios, like the Nokia 7 Plus. Still, some prefer it that way.



Another matter of preference is the fingerprint reader placement, as well as the physical navigation keys. The latter are entirely gone from the new Nokia 6 (2018), with the biometric reader placed around back. Again, some might like it better this way, others not so much. In our opinion, the reader is a bit easier to reach this time around, since it was too low for our liking on the original 2017 model.



Another notable change on the back of the unit since last year is a new, extra-tall camera area. From a distance, one might easily think it is intended to house at least a couple of cameras. That is not the case, since the 2018 Nokia 6 borrows its camera setup directly from the original - a single 16 MP (f/2.0, 1.0 µm) unit, with PDAF and a dual-tone flash. There is a large ZEISS logo stamped on top of the module this time around, but since the lens isn't any brighter, we can't really be sure if something was changed.

There will be a lot more samples in the upcoming full review and we'll definitely try and see if HMD managed to improve something in this department. As far as the UI is concerned, the Nokia camera is already up there with the best. It offers a real pro-grade experience, complete with full manual control over shooting parameters like shutter speed, ISO, focus, White Balance.

Despite the lack of a third microphone, the Nokia 6 (2018) still manages to offer Nokia OZO audio for its videos, like its more expensive siblings. And speaking of video recording, one of the perks of the more powerful Snapdragon 630 chipset is support for 4K capture, at 30fps. A sore omission on the original Nokia 6.

Selfies generally come out very crisp, thanks to the 8 MP (f/2.0, 1.12 µm) front-facing snapper. It's the same as last year, but there's no real reason to complain, since it even offers autofocus, where many other competitors still have you adjusting your arm to get clear results. Smart Pixel technology for stacking up to four frames together, helps with low-light performance.





Nokia is still bushing the Bothies for both photos and videos. Despite the obvious hurdles of trying to properly frame two cameras at once, it's still kind of cool to have the option.

Besides a better camera experience, the upgraded Snapdragon 630 chipset provides a few connectivity perks to the Nokia 6 (2018). Most-notably, a much faster and more capable X12 LTE modem, Bluetooth 5 and Wi-Fi ac support.

Not to mention, a jump to a much more efficient 14nm development process, which should enable the handset to fare better in our battery endurance test than the original, with its 62 hour score.



We've already started the review process and but it's too early to tell how much of an improvement in endurance there is. Plus, while we can clearly feel the Nokia 6 (2018) run its near stock Android ROM smoother than the original, a few benchmark runs can give us a proper idea of just how much of a number-crunching and pixel-pushing boost we can expect.

That scared makers off gaming phones for over a decade, but that fear may have finally faded.

Razer released a gaming phone, so did Acer (also a tablet) and now Xiaomi has jumped the Blackshark, uh, jumped on the bandwagon and apparently ZTE wants to do the same with its nubia brand.

What makes a phone a “gaming phone” anyway? The over-the-top styling is mandatory. Razer also added a 120 Hz screen, popular among twitch game fans, though it seems that Xiaomi will settle for just a gamepad add-on.

If that’s the case, Motorola can claim to sell gaming phones too, thanks to its Gamepad Moto Mod. Come to think of it, Samsung has also made a Gamepad and so have others. Not to mention all the aftermarket options. Clearly, this can’t define a gaming phone.

These phones also come with some game-related software – changing screen resolution to optimize the experience or battery life, recording video to upload to your channel later, even some livestreaming and so on. But again, you can do that with a Galaxy S9.


Before we even try to define what a “gaming phone” is, maybe we should ask the bigger question – does anyone actually want one?

These phones use the most powerful chipsets, but so do regular flagships. And gaming accessories/software are easy to come by. So maybe this is a failed endeavor as flagships are already good at gaming, but also photography, browsing, music and everything else.

Alternatively, the companies are just not ambitious enough – 120 Hz is a good start, but we want more. For example, the Nintendo Switch offers a high performance mode when it’s docked, so maybe a dock with external cooling would be nice (to keep the GPU from throttling). And an HDMI out for gaming on the TV. And yes, do bundle some controllers with the phone, maybe even a VR headset.

Looking at Nintendo sales numbers, we can see why companies want to get in on the action – there’s a lot of money to be made from gaming on the go. Yes, even with casual smartphone games swallowing a big chunk of the market.

Then again, Sony never managed to make a successful gaming phone (it gave up after the Xperia Play) and we haven’t seen a new Vita in forever. So, maybe there can be only one and Nintendo is the Apple of portable gaming, the company that will take most of the profits home and leave only scraps for the rest.

Introduction
Huawei was among the front-runners in the dual-camera race with the P9 and then the Mate 10, so who better to take things to the next level? The Huawei P20 Pro one-ups all current major players and comes with three cameras on its back, each unique in its own right.

Okay, the 20MP monochrome sensor is the least exciting, but not for its lack of color - it's just that we've seen it on a couple of generations of Mates and the P10. The other two, however, are all new.

The star of the show is the 40MP camera - let's go ahead and call it the primary one. It's the most resolution we've seen on a smartphone since the Lumia 1020 PureView all the way back in 2013. The third one has a modest 8MP resolution but boasts an 80mm-equivalent focal length - effectively 3x the focal length of the primary cam. All this camera goodness, of course, carries a Leica branding - the badge of a German optics specialist makes everything better as the Lumia 1020, and its Zeiss lens can attest.

There's more megapixels on the front, 24 of them in the selfie camera. And you couldn't miss it - it's right there in the notch. Yup, notches are everywhere whether they're needed or not, and whether you like them or not.

For all the abundance of pixels in the cameras (some 96MP combined), there are not all that many pixels on the screen - the 6.1-inch AMOLED panel has a FullHD+ resolution of a Huawei-specific variety (1080 x 2240px) to account for the notch.



Huawei likes its batteries big, and the P20 Pro gets a nice 4,000mAh power pack, with the company's flavor of fast charging, one of the fastest around. Another thing Huawei's own, the chipset is the Kirin 970 from the last-gen Mates, so no surprises there either. There's RAM and storage to spare too.

Huawei may be guilty of following some of the not-so-positive trends in the industry such as removing the headphone jack and having a notch on the screen, but we're glad the IR emitter is still on board. It's either Huawei or Xiaomi that you've got left to look to if you want to use your phone to control non-smart stuff around the house. Even the regular P20 won't do - you'll need to step up to the Pro we've got here.

So yes, you can have the latest flagship smartphone replace the remote for your 1992 VCR, but first, you'd need to take it out of the box, so let's start with that.

The Huawei P20 Pro comes in a white cardboard box, which contains all the kit you'd need to get started. Underneath the phone, you'll find a set of earbuds that connect via USB-C, but also a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter in case you want to plug your existing headphones.



There's a USB-A to USB-C cable and a fast charger, and you need both of these together for the proprietary fast charging to work. We love fast charging, but we hate proprietary tech limitations, so we're conflicted. In any case, the fact that you have the quick charger and the cable in the box is great (we're looking at you, Apple).
